Hi there!
Lauren & Gary Klouda created Honest Desires Farm in 2012. We started as an urban farm in Berea, Ohio, and moved to our current farm in 2016. Lauren is the primary farmer-her, but she couldn't farm without the best farm-him.
We hope to get to meet you soon!
Our family started Honest Desires Farm in 2012 after tasting what it was like to grow and sell heirloom produce at our friend's farm stand. We had just a 1/2 acre to call our own but spent the next couple of seasons selling our produce and eggs at farmer's markets in Cleveland, Ohio.
Inspired by how much people loved our fresh, wholesome food, we sold our urban farm and moved into Amish country in Medina County, Ohio. After a couple of years of hiatus, we are now selling edible flowers (fresh and dried), everlasting dried flowers, pressed flowers, botanical art, & more.
Honest: "There seems to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth. The first is by war, as the Romans did, in plundering their conquered neighbors. This is robbery. The second by commerce, which is generally cheating. The third by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God in his favor, as a reward for his innocent life and his virtuous industry." - Benjamin Franklin
One of my top three names for the farm was Honest Way. We dropped the "way" but still feel that “honest” represents our intentions as farmers. We want to earn an honest living, raise honest children, and eat honest-to-goodness real food. Most importantly, we want to share that real food with those who need it and want it.
Desires: "It does not, therefore, depend on man's desires or efforts but on God's mercy." - Romans 9:16
Gary suggested desires. The Romans 9:16 verse is why. It is prominently displayed on our refrigerator as we go about our daily lives. Gary and I have many desires for our family, future, and farm. God doesn't tell us not to have desires but that it all rests on God's mercy, no matter our efforts or desires. The good news is that God is very merciful. As our Heavenly Father, He desires the best for His children. Just like we do ours.
We can go ahead and desire away and work our hardest at life, marriage, raising kids, and farming. All those things require a lot of effort and many, many desires. However, it isn't up to us to make it all work out. It is the mercy of God. For us, that takes a lot of pressure off succeeding. Every farmer knows there will be bugs, unpredictable weather, and unknown variables, but we are free to desire, and God is free to be merciful.
Obviously, this verse is talking about something much deeper as it points to salvation. As a woman (or man), we make efforts and have desires, but no matter our good efforts or good desires, we can't EARN salvation. Salvation is by grace alone. It was paid for by the blood of the perfect sacrificial lamb, Jesus Christ. Please contact me to learn more about Jesus, the Son of the Living God. It is OK to have questions, especially if your heart is angry and hurt, but Jesus suffered immensely and promised to be close to the brokenhearted. Visit this link to read about the perfect way Jesus shed his blood to save you.
the Laurel Wreath: One of the many things it means and represents is nature and the continuation of life from year to year.
Additionally, the Latin meaning of "Lauren" is "the bay or laurel plant." The English/American meaning is "Crown of Laurel".
When designing the logo, I thought of nature and the continuation of the farm from season to season and year to year, not my name, but it is fitting both ways as our farm continues from year to year with the efforts of this Lauren.
Thank you for taking the time to read about HDF and for supporting local foods and small family farms.
You do make a difference.
Sincerely, Lauren Klouda {Artisan - Farm-her}
